Day One in NYC

Our apartment...

The view from the apartment looking towards the Hudson River, Central park is in the distance down the street the other direction...

This city has a fabulous subway system!

A little tour of some gay history. Bought a couple of books and read by river in Hudson River park. We had couple drinks at the Cubby Hole, a terrific gay ol' bar, before heading back to the apartment to meet my cousin for what turned out to be the best burger I have had in a long, long time.

Afterwards, my cousin took us to the bar at which he is a regular, Cafe des Artistes. It was a singular NYC experience. One we never expected to have....we chatted with an author, a screenwriter, an actor, and doctor who is employed at a nearby hospital and worked during the entire 9/11 aftermath.

And we met Claire, who was truly an inspiring lady.

Then we walked home at midnight and did a little grocery shopping on the way. This morning, I update the photos and blog, Sara looks over our books and makes breakfast during which we will plan the day.

Love the story about Claire. What a truly amazing woman, and still going strong at her age. How fortunate you were to meet her.

Cool! Glad you figured out how to get the door unlocked. I would add, given my experience visiting our cousin, that Cafe Des Artistes is only really a "bar" in the sense that complimentary hard boiled quail eggs are "munchies". Anyway, color me jealous. Make sure you go see a play for me.

Great photos!
The McCullar history in Cafe des Artistes seems to be growing and our family connections expanding. It would have been fun to be there with you all, but we had to go swimming in the Little Deschutes.
